Rosanne E. Lortz wrote a brilliant and engaging tale based on real characters and events that chose to make this reading journey one with the most exhilarating of this year. Historical fiction isn't getting much better than this. --Historical Tapestry

This...had all of it from disguises, unsatisfied love, fights for honor, and many compelling coming from all the torments of a man's conscience. I'd personally recommend this book to anyone who's searching for something a bit from the mainstream. --Historically Obsessed

Well written, entertaining, and intriguing, I Serve is definitely a pleasurable and worthy read. --Historical Novel Society (Historical Novels Review Online: February, 2010)

A TALE OF ARMS, OF DEATH, OF LOVE, AND OF HONOR

Set contrary to the turbulent backdrop from the Hundred Years' War, I Serve chronicles the storyplot of Sir John Potenhale. A young Englishman of lowly birth, Potenhale wins his way to knighthood around the fields of France. He enters the service of Edward, the Black Prince of Wales, and immerses himself in the stormy world of war, politics, and romantic intrigue.

While campaigning in France, Potenhale develops an interest in Margery, a spirited lady-in-waiting having a close-kept secret. He soon learns that Sir Thomas Holland, a crass and calculating baron, holds the main element to unlock Margery’s mystery and possesses the power to overturn all of his hopes.

When the Black Death strikes Europe, however, Potenhale realizes how the fiercest enemy does not whatsoever times come in human form. Seeing the pestilence as a punishment for that sins of his generation, he questions his calling as being a knight and considers entering the cloister. Margery or even the monastery? Torn between losing his soul and losing the love of his life, he finds friendship with a French knight who might—just possibly—help him save both.
